Moratorium Campaign

Time for a Pause to Plan

Western North Carolina's mountains are being destroyed by overdevelopment. Family farms, scenic vistas and precious ecosystems are being devastated. This damage to our mountains cannot be undone. Our local governments need to prevent this destruction by regulating development. No one knows what the impact of this unprecedented, rapid development will be on:

  • existing homes and property
  • tourism and our economy
  • our air, water and other natural resources
  • our communities
  • our infrastructure

We cannot afford the economic and environmental price of unchecked mountain development. We cannot afford to lose our ridgetops and slopes.

It is time for a temporary break from the rapid pace of large-scale development to give local people control over our future. A moratorium on certain types of development gives us a chance to pause and plan. Many communities have used this tool to get a handle on out-of-control growth.
